Friday night: I head to Walmart and couldn't find the right type of fabric. Frustrated I headed home with the Trevor and later went to Joann's when Scott got home so I didn't have to take the little guy. After wandering quite a while, I found the right fabric calculated that even with the 50% off it would $6.50 a yard! Still cheaper than buying a Moby though! I took it home and threw it in the wash to get any shrinkage out...mistake 1. The fabric was too heavy to throw in the wash because it held in all the water. I wrung 5 yards of fabric out into the bath tub and hanged it to dry. Over the shower rod, across the toilet and over onto the counter.
Saturday morning: Need to leave for baby shower in Cedar at 10, I have time. i throw the fabric in the dryer to finish drying because it's still wet. I still have time, so I grab my book, lay on the couch and let Trevor watch Mickey. I take it out of the dryer realizing now I only have 1 hour until I need to leave and I have no idea how I am going to cut a straight line on 5 yards of fabric 60 inches wide into 3 strips. I put Trevor in the car and run to Walmart to get straight pins. Come home and start measuring and marking with the pins 20 inches. I run to the internet to check the instructions and see how I could have made this so much easier on myself. The directions online say something to the effect of: cut the fabric in half along the crease line and then you have two wraps. Ah crap. The line washed on in the washer, but cutting it in half has got to be easier than measuring 20 inches every little bit for 5 yards of fabric. I remove the pins and try to line the fabric up so I can cut it in half. Oh boy doing this with 5 yards of fabric and a type of fabric that doesn't like to lay flat at that, it might have been easier to keep measuring the 20 inches. I get it where I think it's close enough and go grab the scissors. One problem though...I can't find the scissors! The only pair I can find are the hair cutting scissors, so guess what I use? Yep, hair cutting scissors. I finally succeed and have two pieces of fabric or finished "Mobys"
At this point I look at the clock and realized that I should have left 20 minutes prior and I didn't have my hair done. I grab a brush and a hair tie and am thankful for hair I can't put into a pony. I fold it carefully, type a quick not and print of directions of use for my friend. I wrapped the wrap in the only wrapping paper we have: Cars. Threw Trevor in the car and off we went.
I am glad that Natalie loved it. I hope I didn't cut it too crooked. But I think it will work. I now have my own Moby for when our little bundle arrives in May. I even practiced using it with one of Trevor's stuffed animals. It turned out pretty cute and I think I would get 6 yards next time instead of 5. 5 yards is a bit snug, but I also have my mini-pouch that only Scott and I can actually notice. I do plan on making another one with my mother-in-law. Who hopefully with her expertise in sewing can show me better methods than the ones that I used. This was a great learning experience and I can't wait to use my Moby with our little munchkin!
The final product laid out across our kitchen floor. In case you didn't know, 5 yards is 15 feet.
