Yep, it's that time. The time that every parent has to go through: potty training. Which some of my co-workers has claimed that and driving is the worst two things a parent will ever have to do. Trevor first used the potty around 19 months. But I truly believe that was right place, right time sort of thing. For the longest time, he was always good about sitting on the potty. We would take him in, set him on the potty and he would try so hard to go. One time he even told me "it stuck mom!" Moments like those in potty training makes it seem like it's not that bad.
We never pushed the issue. We didn't want him to digress; plus there wasn't really a need to push. Just turning 2 is really early for potty training a little boy. We would still take him to the potty and our babysitter was awesome about it too. The only difference is: he wants to use the potty at "dephne's" house. He runs and screams from the potty at his own house. Stephanie will tell us he will go to the bathroom all on his own at her house. That's what bugs me. Not that he's not potty trained, but that he uses it at the sitter's, but not at home. I figured the best possible solution for all this is there are other kids his age there that use the potty and the whole I want to be like so and so is working on Trevor.
Last night he told me he had to go potty and ran down the hall. I was ecstatic! I couldn't believe it. I knew this day would come someday. We rush down the hall, into the bathroom, he pulls down his Pull-ups and sits on the potty. He asks for paper and I wait, wait, wait. Nothing happens "All done." What "All done?" But nothing came out. I look down at his Pull-ups...barely wet. Dangit, but it's closer. He proceeds to get on and off the toilet for several minutes and flushing it every time. I let him, he wasn't doing any damage. I decide to let him into some big boy underwear. He just went, and bed time is in a half-hour. (Can you see where I'm going?) He loves wearing his Elmo underwear, he thinks he's so big and tough.
He's running around, having a blast. "Mommy, potty" I look down to see a little boy whining as he has just had his first accident. This is the moment during potty training that every parent wishes wouldn't happen, but knows it's inevitable. He's on the verge of tears as I tell him it's okay and not a big deal. He was so upset. I knew he would be, he throws a fit when he drops something from his meals (mac and cheese, yogurt, you name it, it equals a fit). I knew it would be good for him just to have an accident. Lucky for me, it was on the laminate flooring...easy clean-up. Through his tears he looks at me and says "it hurt me, kisses!"
Out of all the reactions I was waiting for, it was not this. It broke my heart to see my little man so upset over pee running down his leg. He didn't know how to react, so he picked the best thing he could think of. I grabbed him and gave him a huge hug and gave him kisses until he calmed down. I may have a long road of parenting, but to a toddler, there is nothing that a hug and a kiss won't fix.
